A vague BOQ can produce three very different facade quotations for what appears to be the same HPL requirement. The specification should define the panel and the supporting system clearly enough that suppliers are competing on comparable scope.

1. Define the Application

State that the material is intended for exterior facade use. Do not allow an interior decorative laminate to be substituted for an exterior-grade panel.

2. Define the Grade and Standard

Reference the applicable product standard and required performance classification. Where fire performance is required, state the target classification and request supporting documentation.

3. State Thickness

Specify the approved thickness or performance requirement rather than allowing the contractor to change it without approval.

4. State Finish and Decor

Identify the approved colour, wood decor, stone design or surface texture. For critical projects, include a physical sample approval process.

5. Define the Substructure

State whether the frame is aluminium, galvanised steel or another approved system. Include corrosion protection and treatment of cut edges and site modifications.

6. Define Fixings

Identify the approved fastener type, finish and visible/hidden fixing approach where relevant. Compatibility between metals should be addressed.

7. Include Installation Scope

The BOQ should make clear whether cutting, fabrication, substructure, brackets, access equipment, wastage and installation are included.

Sample BOQ Structure

  1. Supply of exterior-grade HPL panels
  2. Approved thickness and decor
  3. Substructure and brackets
  4. Fixings and profiles
  5. Panel cutting and fabrication
  6. Installation and alignment
  7. Access and safety provisions
  8. Testing/documentation where required

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the BOQ mention HPL thickness?

Yes, unless the specification is performance-based and the approved alternative is clearly defined.

Should the frame be included?

Yes. A facade quotation should clearly state the supporting system so material-only and installed prices are not confused.

Why approve physical samples?

Digital images cannot fully reproduce texture, gloss and colour under outdoor light.

HPL Maker can provide product information and technical details to support an architectural facade specification.
